Carrie, My Sister
“I am standing upon the seashore.
A ship at my side spreads her white
sails to the morning breeze and starts
for the blue ocean.
She is an object of beauty and strength.
I stand and watch her until at length
she hangs like a speck of white cloud
just where the sea and sky come
to mingle with each other.
Then, someone at my side says;
"There, she is gone!"
"Gone where?"
Gone from my sight. That is all.
She is just as large in mast and hull
and spar as she was when she left my side
and she is just as able to bear her
load of living freight to her destined port.
Her diminished size is in me, not in her.
And just at the moment when someone
at my side says, "There, she is gone!"
There are other eyes watching her coming,
and other voices ready to take up the glad
shout;
"Here she comes!"
And that is dying.”

Yes, she is gone from view. But she is still in the "mind's eye", in the memory bank, in the hearts of many and here in spirit. In life, she was bigger than life, she was expansive and full of life, she was funnier than all get out, very witty and full of wisdom and she had more ideas and wishful thinking than anyone else I know. She made a pretty mean Blueberry Pie, she did everything with a flourish. If it had to do with health she wanted to learn more, she was a teacher and a student about a lot of things. She was always looking outside of herself and thinking about others. She gave a lot of herself..maybe she gave away too much of her self to others. She had a "style" that was her own. I have often envied people who seemed to follow their inner vision. She might not have accomplished everything she had hoped to, but she seemed to have her "dreams" of what she wanted and "acted as if" she had accomplished a lot of what she wanted. She was spiritual in her own way and also hung on to some traditional spiritual things as well as the less conventional. She was artistic in many ways. One way was through her sense of style for clothes, interior decorating was another. But she was creative in how she lived her life. She created a life style that suited her and fed her and gave her a vision of what she wanted to be. Wish she was still with us, I would have liked to have known her better.
